Belgian Science Policy Office (BELSPO) is Belgium's federal space-policy and research-funding body for space research and applications.[1] In Earth observation, its role is coordination, national research funding, and Belgian representation into ESA rather than direct satellite operation.[1][2] BELSPO manages Belgian contributions to ESA and represents Belgium through the Belgian Delegation, while the STEREO programme funds Belgian Earth observation research.[1][3] STEREO IV runs from 2022 to 2029 as the eighth phase of Belgian EO research funding, continuing a national programme line that began in 1985.[2] The PROBA missions are ESA-owned and ESA-operated, with Belgium contributing technology and research rather than serving as the operator.[3]
