New Zealand Space Agency is the New Zealand government space-policy, regulation, and sector-development function within MBIE, based in Wellington.[1] It was established in April 2016 and uses MBIE's public space-policy domain rather than a separate agency domain.[2][1] NZSA does not own or operate an EO satellite portfolio; its EO-relevant role is as national regulator, policy lead, and sector-development body.[2][1] For MethaneSAT, New Zealand's role was funding and partnership through MBIE, while MethaneSAT LLC, an Environmental Defense Fund subsidiary, was the operator, and contact with the spacecraft was lost in June 2025.[3][4] For EO buyers, NZSA is a public-sector counterpart for New Zealand space policy, regulation, and sector development, not a satellite operator.[1]
