Copernicus Global Land Service Surface Soil Moisture 1 km (SSM1km)

Copernicus Global Land Service Surface Soil Moisture 1 km (SSM1km) is a Level-3 surface soil moisture product derived from Sentinel-1 C-band SAR backscatter. The retrieval applies the TUW (Technische Universitaet Wien) change detection model to C-band backscatter observations.[1]

Spatial resolution is 1000 m and geographic coverage is the European continent; a global product is not part of the current version. Output is provided as daily composites for dates when Sentinel-1 data are available, dependent on the Sentinel-1 acquisition plan and the satellite repeat cycle, which varies between approximately 6 and 12 days per swath depending on orbit configuration.[2]

The product provides soil moisture as a relative saturation index (degree of saturation). It is suited for agricultural monitoring, drought assessment, and hydrological modelling applications across Europe where daily surface wetness state at regional scale is required.[2]

Access is free and open via the Copernicus Land Monitoring Service at land.copernicus.eu. No registration is required.[2]
