HLS V2.0 (Harmonized Landsat Sentinel-2)

HLS V2.0 (Harmonized Landsat Sentinel-2) is a surface reflectance product suite produced by NASA GSFC that normalises Landsat 8/9 and Sentinel-2 observations to a common 30 m grid, enabling consistent multi-decadal time series from the combined Landsat and Sentinel-2 archives. The suite comprises two sub-products: HLSL30 v2.0 derived from Landsat OLI (11 bands including TIRS thermal resampled to 30 m) and HLSS30 v2.0 derived from Sentinel-2 MSI (13 bands)[1][2]. Products are delivered as Cloud Optimized GeoTIFFs with spectral coverage from 443 to 2200 nm[3].

Processing applies BRDF normalisation, atmospheric correction using MODIS-derived (transitioned to VIIRS ancillary data in May 2024) aerosol inputs, and Fmask cloud masking[4]. Aerosol QA bits were introduced in V2.0; V1.x archives lack these flags[3]. Typical data latency is 2 to 3 days from acquisition to product availability[5]. Products are distributed open access under the NASA Earthdata Use Policy through the LP DAAC, with STAC access via the LP DAAC CMR-STAC endpoint[6].

As of the research date, the HLSS30 v2.0 sub-product incorporates Sentinel-2A, 2B, and 2C acquisitions[3]. The CMR UMM-JSON records may lag the operational state of the constellation[2]. A low-latency HLS product was listed as in development; the hls.gsfc.nasa.gov project page as of the research date indicated an early 2027 target[3], while a NASA Earthdata overview page cited an end-of-2025 estimate[5].
