VIIRS 375 m Active Fire NRT (FIRMS)
VIIRS 375 m Active Fire NRT (FIRMS) is a Level-2 active fire and thermal anomaly detection product derived from VIIRS I-band channels at 375 m ground sample distance. The algorithm uses all five VIIRS 375 m I-band channels, with the I4 mid-infrared band (3.55-3.93 um) as the primary fire detection channel.[1]
Two product variants are available: VNP14IMG from the Suomi-NPP VIIRS instrument, with Science Data Records archived from 2012-01-19; and VJ114IMG from the NOAA-20 (JPSS-1) VIIRS instrument. The archive start date for VJ114IMG is reported as approximately 2018 in available product documentation.[2] Output is provided as 6-minute swath granules.
The product uses the Schroeder et al. 2014 fire detection algorithm. I4 band saturation frequently occurs over large, intense fires; in saturation conditions the algorithm operates in detection-only mode and does not provide sub-pixel fire characterisation.[1]
Near-real-time delivery is within 3 hours of satellite acquisition via NASA FIRMS. Output formats include TXT, SHP, KML, and WMS; TXT and SHP files contain the full attribute set. Access is free under the NASA EOSDIS open data policy at firms.modaps.eosdis.nasa.gov.[3]
