The current legal entity was formed in 2003 through a merger; industrial operations trace to 1908.[1] Avio has been listed on the Milan Stock Exchange (STAR segment, ticker AVIO.MI) since April 2017.[1] Leonardo S.p.A. holds a minority stake in Avio, reported at around 19%; earlier figures were higher.[1] The company employs approximately 1,200 people across five sites in Italy (Colleferro, Campania, and Piedmont), France, and French Guiana.[2] Revenue was EUR 357 million in 2022 with an order book of EUR 2.166 billion.[2]
Avio is the prime contractor for the Vega and Vega-C small-lift launch vehicles for ESA.[2] Its main products include the P80 first-stage motor, the Zefiro-23 second-stage motor, and the Zefiro-9 third-stage motor used in the Vega family, as well as the P120C solid strap-on booster shared with Ariane 6.[2] The Vega-E next-generation cryogenic upper stage is in development. Vega-C returned to flight in December 2024 carrying Sentinel-1C; four Vega-C launches were planned for 2025, with five in 2026.[3] ESA authorised Avio to pursue direct commercial Vega-C sales from 2025. CEO Giulio Ranzo has led the company since 2015.[2]
