Former Selex-Galileo (Finmeccanica), now part of Leonardo S.p.A.; subcontractor for ATLID detector subsystem on EarthCARE.

Selex-Galileo was an electro-optics and defence electronics brand of Finmeccanica (now Leonardo S.p.A.), active from 2008 to 2013. The brand was consolidated into Selex ES in 2013 and subsequently absorbed into Leonardo S.p.A. in 2016.[1] Facilities operated by Leonardo under this lineage are located at Campi Bisenzio in the Florence area and Pomezia near Rome, and continue to operate as centres for space-grade optical and electro-optic sensor manufacturing.

Its EO instrument contributions include the ATLID laser transmitter subsystem on the ESA EarthCARE mission, launched 29 May 2024. The ATLID instrument is an ultraviolet 355 nm backscatter lidar; the laser transmitter assembly of approximately 80 optical elements was built by Selex-Galileo at the Leonardo Pomezia and Campi Bisenzio facilities for ESA's EarthCARE mission.[2][3]

The optical manufacturing capability associated with Selex-Galileo, Selex ES, and Leonardo represents a continuous specialisation in space-grade electro-optic instruments across these corporate transitions.
