Copernicus Marine OMEGA3D Global Observed Ocean Physics 3D Currents
OMEGA3D (product ID MULTIOBS_GLO_PHY_UVW_3D_MYNRT_015_007) is a global L4 ocean-physics product distributed by the Copernicus Marine Service. It provides three-dimensional quasi-geostrophic current fields, including horizontal velocity components (U, V) and vertical velocity (W), on a global 0.25-degree grid from the surface to 1500 m depth.[1][2]
The product is produced by CNR (Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche, Italy) and is derived from the ARMOR3D temperature, salinity, and sea surface height fields using the Q-vector formulation of the omega equation to diagnose vertical velocities and thermal wind balance for horizontal currents.[2] Both near-real-time (NRT) and reprocessed multiyear (REP) time series are available; the NRT stream extends the record at approximately annual cadence, though the precise extension schedule is stated on the product page rather than in the primary peer-reviewed literature.[1]
The ESSD 2020 peer-reviewed paper describing the method covers the record through 2018.[2] The product is distributed free of charge under the Copernicus Marine open-data licence via the CMEMS data portal.[1]
