Ultraviolet, visible, near-infrared and short-wave infrared spectrometer hosted on Metop-SG A satellites for daily global atmospheric composition, air-quality, trace-gas, ozone, aerosol, and volcanic-ash observations.

Sensor

Sentinel-5 UVNS is the ultraviolet, visible, near-infrared and short-wave infrared spectrometer on Metop-SG A satellites for polar-orbit atmospheric-composition monitoring. [1] [2] It is a passive optical pushbroom imaging spectrometer covering ozone, sulphur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, water vapour, methane, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, bromine oxide, formaldehyde, glyoxal, volcanic ash and aerosols. [1] The detailed band envelope is seven bands spanning 270-2400 nm. [2] A second summary range for the same instrument is 270-2385 nm. [3] Spatial sampling is 7.5 x 7.5 km at nadir for most wavelengths, 1.4 x 7.5 km in NIR2, and below 50 x 50 km below 300 nm. [2] The cross-track swath is 2670 km, supporting near-global daily coverage from the Metop-SG polar orbit. [2] [1] Sentinel-5 UVNS has demonstrated tropospheric nitrogen dioxide and sulphur dioxide column work and short-wave-infrared absorption screening on Metop-SG A1. [2] [1]
