Space Systems division of Airbus SE, formed 2014 from EADS Astrium, Cassidian, and Airbus Military. Prime contractor for ESA Sentinel-1, Sentinel-2, Sentinel-6, and BIOMASS; MWR subcontractor on Sentinel-3. Operates Pleiades Neo (2/4 operational post-Vega-C 2022), Pleiades 1A/1B, SPOT 6/7. Co-owns TerraSAR-X/TanDEM-X with DLR via public-private partnership. OneAtlas commercial data platform.

Airbus Defence and Space (Airbus DS) is the Space Systems division of Airbus SE, formed in January 2014 through consolidation of EADS Astrium, Cassidian, and Airbus Military. This entry covers the EO-relevant Space Systems perimeter only.[1]

Commercial Optical Constellations

Airbus DS owns and operates a tiered optical constellation portfolio. Pleiades Neo offers 0.3 m panchromatic / 1.2 m multispectral resolution from 620 km SSO; four satellites were planned, but Neo 5 and Neo 6 were lost in the December 2022 Vega-C launch failure, leaving Neo 3 and Neo 4 operational as of the research date.[2] Pleiades Neo Next, targeting 20 cm native resolution, is planned for launch from Kourou in early 2028. Pleiades 1A and 1B provide 0.7 m panchromatic / 2.8 m multispectral coverage and are planned to remain operational to 2028. SPOT-6 (1.5 m panchromatic / 6 m multispectral) continues the 1986-2015 SPOT archive series; SPOT-7 operations ceased March 2023. Vision-1 (0.87 m panchromatic / 3.5 m multispectral, with Surrey Satellite Technology) is scheduled for end of life in September 2026. CO3D is a four-satellite 50 cm stereo constellation developed with CNES, with all four satellites launched in July 2025.[3][4]

Commercial Radar EO Constellations

TerraSAR-X and TanDEM-X operate as an X-band SAR pair in formation at 514 km, offering resolutions from 25 cm Spotlight to 40 m ScanSAR. TerraSAR-X has been operational since January 2008. DLR retains scientific data rights under a public-private partnership; Airbus DS holds exclusive commercial exploitation rights.[5] PAZ, a Spanish X-band SAR satellite operated by Hisdesat, delivers 25 cm Spotlight imagery and is compatible with the TerraSAR-X data infrastructure. PAZ-2, a two-satellite programme with a planned 10 cm resolution target, has a contract signed in July 2025 targeting a mid-2031 launch.[4]

Defence Radar EO

SARah is a three-satellite X-band SAR constellation providing reconnaissance capability for the Bundeswehr (SARah-1 launched June 2022; SARah-2 and SARah-3 launched December 2023). Airbus DS is the main subcontractor to OHB, which holds the system prime role.[1]

Copernicus Sentinel Contributions

Airbus DS is satellite prime contractor for Sentinel-2 (all three satellites: 2A launched 2015, 2B launched 2017, 2C launched 2024), responsible for the spacecraft and the MSI multispectral instrument covering 13 bands at 10-60 m resolution.[6] On Sentinel-1, Airbus DS is prime contractor for the C-band SAR instrument; Thales Alenia Space Italy is the satellite platform prime.[7] Airbus DS is prime contractor for Sentinel-6 Michael Freilich and Sentinel-6B (launched November 2025), carrying the POSEIDON-4 radar altimeter.[8] Airbus UK serves as prime for the Sentinel-5P satellite platform, and Airbus DS delivered the Sentinel-5 UVNS spectrometer for MetOp-SG-A1. On Sentinel-3, Airbus DS is the MWR microwave radiometer instrument subcontractor (Spain site); Thales Alenia Space France is the satellite prime.[9] The BIOMASS P-band SAR Earth Explorer mission (launched April 2025), the first P-band SAR in orbit, is an Airbus DS prime contract for both spacecraft and instrument.[10]

MetOp Weather Satellites

Airbus DS supplied the MetOp-A, -B, and -C satellite platforms to EUMETSAT; MetOp-A was retired in 2021 after 15 years of operations, while MetOp-B and -C remain operational. For the MetOp Second Generation (MetOp-SG) programme, Airbus DS is providing platforms for all six planned satellites and the IASI-NG infrared sounder instrument from Ottobrunn.[4]

Government EO Satellites Built for Foreign Customers

Airbus DS has supplied EO satellite systems to government customers including PeruSat-1 (0.7 m PAN / 2 m MS, CNOIS Peru, 2016), KazEOSat-1 (2.5 m PAN / 10 m MS, Kazakhstan, 2014), AlSat-2A (2.5 m PAN / 10 m MS, Algeria, 2010), and AlSat-2B (Algeria, 2016).[1]

Satellite Bus Platforms for EO

The EO bus family spans AstroBus-S (mid-size LEO, 400-500 kg), AstroBus-L / AstroSat-250 (used on SPOT-6/7 and KazEOSat-1), AstroBus SE (used on CO3D variants), AstroBus Neo (latest modular platform, 285-900 kg class), and the S950 optical bus (approximately 900 kg, 10-year design life, used on Pleiades Neo).[4]

Data Products and Ground Infrastructure

The OneAtlas platform aggregates optical imagery (Pleiades, SPOT, Vision-1, Pleiades Neo), radar data (TerraSAR-X, TanDEM-X, PAZ), 3D products (WorldDEM, CO3D DSM), and thematic analytics including Starling forest monitoring and Verde crop monitoring.[11] A 2026 framework agreement with Synspective will add access to the Synspective 30-satellite SAR constellation into the OneAtlas portfolio. Ground infrastructure includes direct receiving stations, a Mission Control Centre in Friedrichshafen, a Pleiades Neo ground segment enhancement via Skynopy software-defined ground stations (2026), and turnkey ground systems supplied to foreign government customers.[4]
