Spanish aerospace company, formerly CASA Espacio (1923-origin), became part of EADS Astrium on 1 January 2004, subsequently renamed Airbus Defence and Space S.A.U. on 24 July 2014. In its EADS CASA Espacio form, led the >20-company European consortium that built the MIRAS (Microwave Imaging Radiometer using Aperture Synthesis) payload for ESA's SMOS (Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity) mission under a €62M ESA contract (signed 2004). MIRAS is the first spaceborne 2D interferometric radiometer, operating at L-band (1.4 GHz) from 763 km altitude.
EADS CASA Espacio was the Spanish space division with origins tracing to CASA, founded in 1923. The unit became part of EADS Astrium on 1 January 2004, and was subsequently renamed Airbus Defence and Space S.A.U. on 24 July 2014. [1] The slug represents the entity as it operated during the SMOS/MIRAS programme.
In its EADS CASA Espacio form, the organisation served as prime contractor for the MIRAS (Microwave Imaging Radiometer using Aperture Synthesis) payload on ESA's SMOS (Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity) mission, leading a consortium of more than 20 European companies. The EUR 62 million ESA contract was signed in Madrid on 11 June 2004. [2] MIRAS is the first spaceborne 2D interferometric radiometer, operating at L-band (1.4 GHz) from a 763 km orbit. SMOS launched in 2009. [3]
